Steering group meeting report – Jun 16th

Present:
Kevin Wilson
Lizzie Milward
Owen Gaskell
Julie Thorne

Guests: (to be co-opted 🙂  )
Wendy Pelton
Barry Bookout
Graham

We welcomed guests and introduced ourselves. Kevin did a quick rundown on the Transition movement for the benefit of guests.

Group Structure
Julie reported back on the requirements to open a bank account at the Credit Union. They require a constitution and bylaws for the group, and minutes of meetings. We are not required to be a registered society. However, we should create a constitution and bylaws that meet BC Societies (and Transition Network) requirements right from the start, to avoid rework later. Kevin will obtain examples of BC Societies and Transition Network constitutions and bylaws for us to work from.

Awareness Raising Event Schedule

We considered our tentative summer event schedule and firmed it up. Proposed Dates (subject to venue availability and conflict checking)

Tues June 30 7:30 pm: previewing of “Peak Oil – Imposed by Nature”, possibly at Graham’s house (TBConfirmed). Open to anyone on the Transition Powell River mailing list. Preceded by short steering group business meeting.

Tues July 14th steering group business meeting, 7pm at Kevin’s house in Cranberry.

Thurs July 16, 6-8pm: TPR presence at Hot Summer Nights market on Willingdon Beach with display table to promote upcoming screening and raise awareness. Kevin has contacted Karen, the organiser, about a table and she has confirmed we can have space for free or make a donation if we can. We’ll need to provide our own table, umbrella, etc.

Tues July 21 Film Screening: “Peak Oil – Imposed by Nature” at VIU or Unitarian Hall. To include before and after activities as described in the Transition Handbook. Date subject to conflict checking.

Sun Jul 26th: possible presence at Cranberry Dayz? TBC

Tues Sep 15th Film Screening: “The Power of Community” at VIU or Unitarian Hall. To include before and after activities as described in the Transition Handbook. Date subject to conflict checking.

Sat Sep 19th or Sun 20th: Open Space conference day on Local Food. Location TBA. Date TBC.

Sep 26-27: possible presence at Fall Fair.

November or January: “Eco Fair” major event.

Everyone on the mailing list or who wants to be involved is welcomed and needed to help at information tables and film screening nights. We will need people to be at the door at screenings, possibly set up the room depending on the venue we use, transport displays to events, create displays, create and distribute handouts, put up posters, be at event/display tables to talk to the public, etc etc. We could have refreshments available at film screenings “by donation” as a fundraiser: that would mean people bringing food. There’s lots to do!

Film screenings in July and August are intended to be small events (50-60 people) for us to practice the process, especially before-and-after discussions, and customise the process for Powell River.

Possible Venues:
VIU has the hardware easily available to show films, and they do provide rooms free to non-profit groups. Film screenings there also provide automatic credibility. They are a little picky about who they allow to use their facilities, and as a new group we might not qualify.
Unitarian Hall is friendly to our group but does not have screening hardware installed. Wendy P has a computer projector and small-ish screen: we could borrow or lash-up a larger screen.

Publicity:
Once dates and locations are pinned down, Kevin and Wendy P will co-operate on a poster and handbills.

Other Ideas
Various ideas for projects and data collection came up during the meeting. These included:

  • Discussion on solar energy potentials in PR: Barry, Lizzie and Graham
  • We could create a skills and interests inventory for all the people on the TPR mailing list so we know who to call on for tasks and projects
  • Gathering information about groups and projects currently happening in PR: we could have a chart available at events for people to “fill in the blanks” under various headings (food, energy, transportation, housing etc) to tell us about projects and groups. This could be a big wall chart or kept on a computer.
  • Kevin suggested a “SWAT Team” for weatherizing houses: a group of people who spend a day at each person’s house, weatherstripping, caulking, insulating, installing thermostats etc then moving onto the next house the next week/month. Experienced people from the first team could form a new team and train them: teams could weatherize houses for people who couldn’t afford to do it themselves, using donated/grant-bought materials?

Ideas for projects need to be recorded, perhaps as part of the TPR blog.
